How to appear on Google Maps is probably the question small business owners ask me most often. The answer has two parts. First, the business has to exist on the map, with a verified profile and an accurate location. Then it has to show up when someone searches for the service as well, alongside searches for its exact name. In this article I go through both parts, from how to add your business to Google Maps to the most common reasons customers still do not see it.

How to add your business to Google Maps step by step

A business appears on the map through its Google Business Profile. There are two ways to get there:

  1. From Google Maps. In the app or in a browser, find the option to add a business. On a computer, it is enough to right-click the spot on the map where the business is located and choose to add a business.
  2. Through business.google.com. Sign in with the Google account that belongs to the business and start creating a new profile.

Both paths lead to the same process: business name, primary category, location or service area, phone and website, followed by verification. Before you start, type the business name into Google Maps and check whether a listing already exists. If it does, claim it instead of creating a new one, because two listings for the same business cause confusion.

I describe every setup step in detail in Google Business Profile: How to Create and Set It Up Step by Step, so here I focus on what is specific to the map itself.

A business with an address or a business that works on location

Google distinguishes two kinds of local businesses, and how you appear on the map depends on that choice.

A business customers visit, such as a salon, car repair shop, store or office, shows its address and a pin on the map. Make sure the pin sits exactly at the entrance, with the right street and house number. A customer who arrives at the wrong place rarely comes back, and an inaccurate location confuses Google too.

A business that works at customers’ locations, such as a plumber, electrician, cleaner or handyman, hides its address and lists a service area. Google allows up to 20 cities or areas, and its guidelines say the area should not extend beyond roughly two hours of driving from where you are based. Do not show your home address for this kind of work, because it is against the rules and a common reason for suspension.

Verification: without it the map does not show you properly

Until the profile is verified, Google does not show it fully and you cannot manage all its details. Google chooses the verification method: a call or SMS with a code, an email, a short video or a postcard with a code sent by mail. For video verification, record the street or sign, the premises and equipment, and proof that you manage the business, all in one continuous recording.

After verification, do not change the name, address and category all at once. Larger edits can trigger another review, and during that time the profile can be temporarily less visible.

Why a business does not appear on the map

When an owner tells me they are “not on Google Maps”, the cause is almost always one of these:

  • the profile is not verified, or verification was started and never finished
  • the profile is under review after larger changes to the name, address or category
  • the profile is suspended, which shows up as a message when you sign in to the profile
  • there is a duplicate listing, so visibility is split between two profiles
  • the pin is in the wrong place, or the address is written differently than on the website and in the register
  • you are searching for a general term, and the profile does not yet have enough relevance and reviews to appear for it

The first four causes are fixed in the profile itself, while the fifth and sixth need cleaned up details and work on visibility, which the rest of this article covers.

Existing on the map and being visible on the map

A business that appears when you type its name exists on the map. What matters more for business is whether it appears when someone types “hairdresser Zagreb” or “plumber near me”, because that is how most customers who do not know you yet search.

For those searches Google chooses businesses based on three things: how well the profile matches the search, how close the business is to the person searching and how well known it is, which includes reviews and mentions across the web. I describe how to reach the top three by those criteria in Ranking on Google: How a Local Business Reaches the Top 3.

How to check where you appear

Searching from your own phone while you are at your premises gives a falsely good picture, because you are the closest business at that moment. A customer a few kilometres away sees a different order. That is why I measure visibility on a grid of points spread across the city, usually 130, and at each one I check where the business appears for the main keyword.

This kind of measurement shows progress clearly. A hair salon in Zagreb was visible on 4 of 130 points at the start and reached 2nd place in 68 days. A plumbing business in Rijeka started at 12 of 130 points and reached 1st place in 79 days.

Five things that help visibility on the map most

Once the profile is verified and the location accurate, these things move visibility the most:

  1. The right primary category and a few secondary ones that describe your real activities.
  2. A complete list of services with descriptions, consistent with your website.
  3. Regular new reviews and a reply to every one of them. I explain how to get them without risk in How to Get More Google Reviews.
  4. Real photos and posts added every week or two.
  5. The same name, address and phone on the profile, the website and in directories.

Special cases: moving, several locations and seasonal work

Some situations need extra care so the business does not disappear from the map.

Moving. When the business moves, change the address on the existing profile instead of creating a new one, because that way you keep your reviews and history. Google will probably verify the new address again. Update the address right away on the website, social media and in directories as well.

Several locations. Each location that customers visit and where staff work gets its own profile, with its own address and phone. On the website it is best to give each location a separate page and link the matching profile to it.

Seasonal work. Holiday apartments, coastal restaurants and similar businesses that operate only part of the year do not need to close their profile. Setting special hours or a temporary closure is enough, so the profile keeps its reviews and visibility for the next season.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google charge for adding a business to Google Maps?

No. Adding a business, verifying it and editing the Google Business Profile are all free. You only pay for ads, if you decide to run them.

Can I appear on the map without a physical address?

Yes. Businesses that work at customers' locations create a profile with a service area: the address is hidden, and the profile appears for searches in the cities and areas you list.

Why does my business not appear even when I type its name?

The most common reasons are an unverified profile, a profile under review after larger edits, a suspension or a duplicate listing. Sign in to the profile and check the messages Google shows there.

How quickly does a new business appear on the map?

After verification, the profile usually appears for searches by name within a few days. For general searches like a service plus a city, it takes more time and work on the profile.
