WooCommerce or Shopify: Which to Choose for an Online Store in Croatia
WooCommerce or Shopify in Croatia? A comparison for a small online store: card payments, fiscalization, delivery, upkeep and SEO, and when to pick each one.
In this article
When an owner decides to sell online, the first big question is the platform. In Croatia the choice is most often between WooCommerce and Shopify, and almost everyone who comes to me with an idea for an online store asks how Shopify works in Croatia and whether it is worth more than WooCommerce. I build stores on both platforms, so here I compare them the way I do on a first call with a client: based on what you actually need for selling, payments and delivery in Croatia.
In short: how they differ
WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. The store lives on your hosting, you have full control over every part and you can customize it with almost no limits. In return, you (or someone you hire) are responsible for hosting, updates, security and speed.
Shopify is a ready-made platform you pay for with a monthly subscription. Shopify takes care of hosting, security and upgrades, and you focus on products and orders. Extra features come through apps from Shopify’s app store, many of which are paid separately.
Both platforms can carry a serious business. The only question is which one better suits the number of products, the way you take payments and how much time you want to spend on the technical side.
Shopify in Croatia: what it does well
Shopify is strongest when you want to start fast and do not want to worry about a server. Setting up a basic store is quick, hosting stays stable even during big sales, and the cart and checkout work well on mobile, where most purchases happen today. Security upgrades happen automatically, so there is no fear that an add-on will break the store after an update.
For an owner who runs the store alone, that means fewer technical worries. Adding products, tracking orders and sending customer notifications are simple even without prior experience.
The limits appear in local details. If Shopify’s own payment system is not available for your business, you use an external payment provider, and Shopify then charges an additional fee per transaction on top of the subscription. For Croatian specifics such as receipt fiscalization, payment slips with a barcode or domestic courier services, you depend on apps, and the choice of local solutions is smaller than for WooCommerce. So before deciding, I check whether there is an app that works reliably for each of those needs.
WooCommerce: what it does well
WooCommerce is strongest when you need freedom. You can connect it to almost anything, from warehouse software to accounting, and customize the design and checkout flow without platform limits. For stores with many products, variants, special wholesale prices or unusual shipping rules, that is often decisive.
For the Croatian market WooCommerce has an advantage in the number of ready-made local add-ons. Most domestic card payment processors offer WooCommerce plugins, and there are also solutions for fiscalization, barcode payment slips and the courier services Croatian customers use most.
The price of that freedom is maintenance. WordPress, WooCommerce and all add-ons need regular updates, backups and checks after every upgrade. Store speed depends on the hosting and on how many add-ons are installed, so a poorly put together WooCommerce store can be slow. For the stores I build, maintenance is part of the agreement from day one.
Payments, fiscalization and delivery in Croatia
These are the three things that most often decide the platform for Croatian stores, and owners usually only think of them near the end of the build.
Payments. Customers in Croatia pay by card, but also by bank transfer using a payment slip and by cash on delivery, which is still very common here. Check which card payment provider suits you and whether it has a ready integration for the platform you choose.
Fiscalization. Depending on the payment method and your company’s status, receipts from the store must be fiscalized. Before the build, talk to your accountant about how receipts will be created and passed to bookkeeping, and only then choose the solution for the store.
Delivery. Customers expect a choice between home delivery and parcel lockers. A good integration with the courier saves you time on every order, because labels and shipment tracking are generated automatically.
Costs and maintenance
With Shopify you pay the monthly subscription, the apps you use and payment fees. Costs are predictable, and technical maintenance is mostly included.
With WooCommerce you pay for hosting, the domain, any paid add-ons and the theme, plus maintenance, whether you do it yourself or someone does it for you. The monthly platform cost can be lower, but you also need to count the time or work required to keep the store fast and secure.
That is why I compare the total cost over two or three years, including all apps, add-ons and maintenance. The price of the subscription or hosting alone says very little about what the store will really cost you.
SEO for an online store on both platforms
The platform alone does not bring customers from Google. On both you can edit page titles and descriptions, product and category addresses, image alt text and structured product data. Shopify has some fixed URL parts, such as /products/ and /collections/, while WooCommerce allows a completely custom structure.
In practice, ranking differences most often come from three things: your own product descriptions instead of text copied from the manufacturer, category pages with a useful introduction, and loading speed on mobile. It is also worth connecting Google Merchant Center, so your products can appear in Google’s shopping results. I explain how SEO works in general in What Is SEO and How It Works for a Small Business, and for existing stores I also do SEO optimization.
If you already have a store: moving between platforms
Some clients come with an existing store that is slow, hard to edit or does not support something they need. Moving between WooCommerce and Shopify is possible in both directions, but it needs a plan.
Products, categories, customers and order history are transferred with import tools, and afterwards I manually check images, variants and prices. The most important part for Google is the addresses. Every old product and category address must be permanently redirected (a 301 redirect) to the new one, otherwise the store loses rankings it spent years building and customers following old links land on an error. I also carry over page titles and descriptions, so the store appears in search results the same way as before.
A move is best done outside the peak sales season, with a trial period in which the new store runs alongside the old one until everything is checked.
When to choose Shopify and when WooCommerce
I usually recommend Shopify when:
- you have up to a few hundred products and simple shipping rules
- you want to run the store yourself without worrying about servers and updates
- a quick launch and stability matter more to you than complete freedom to customize
- there are proven apps for payments and fiscalization that suit your business
I usually recommend WooCommerce when:
- you have many products, variants or special prices for different customers
- the store needs to connect to existing warehouse or accounting software
- you want to use domestic payment processors and local fiscalization solutions
- you already have a WordPress website and want the store in the same place
How I can help you decide
On a first call I go through the number of products, payment and delivery methods, fiscalization and how much you want to work on the store yourself. After that you get a platform recommendation with the reasoning and a build plan. Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify be used in Croatia?
Yes. Shopify works for Croatian businesses, and the store can be in Croatian with prices in euros. Before deciding, check how you will take card payments and fiscalize receipts, because that determines which apps you need.
Is WooCommerce free?
The plugin itself is free, but you need hosting, a domain, a theme and often paid add-ons for payments, shipping or fiscalization. On top of that comes regular maintenance: updates, backups and checking that everything works after each upgrade.
Can I move my store from one platform to the other later?
Yes. Products, customers and orders can be transferred, but the move needs planning. The most important part is redirecting old product and category addresses to the new ones, so the store does not lose its Google rankings.
Which platform is better for SEO?
Both allow good SEO: custom titles and descriptions, clean addresses and fast loading. WooCommerce gives more freedom in URL structure, while Shopify has some fixed URL parts such as /products/. Differences in rankings more often come from content and site speed.
